OUR STORY

HOW IT STARTED

At Black Acorn Studio, every piece of wood carries a story. Mine began with a few well-worn tools passed down from my late uncle.

My uncle, David Black, was a scroll saw woodworker in the Scottish Highlands. His projects were different from the furniture and homeware I create today, but his love for craft was the spark that set me on this path. When he passed away in 2021, some of his modest tools found their way to me. They weren’t expensive or fancy, but they became the foundation of my workshop and the reason I picked up woodworking in the first place.

What began as a way to honour his memory soon grew into a passion. I taught myself and discovered the quiet joy of shaping wood into something useful, lasting, and beautiful.

Today, in my small Newcastle workshop, I make handcrafted pieces — from cutting boards and coasters to jewellery boxes, and now progressing to larger items like coffee tables. Every piece is carefully designed, combining function with the natural beauty of the wood.

The name Black Acorn is both a tribute and a symbol: “Black” for my uncle David, whose influence started me on this path, and “Acorn” for growth, roots, and new beginnings.

Each piece I make carries that spirit forward, a reminder that even the simplest tools can create something timeless when guided by care and intention.

When you purchase from Black Acorn Studio, you’re not just buying an object. You’re carrying on a story of heritage, family, and craft — one that I hope will live on in your home for years to come.

I’m grateful you’ve taken a moment to read my story. Your support helps this craft continue to grow, and I hope my work finds a place in your story too.
